SIGHT ALIGNMENT AND SIGHT PICTURE: WHAT ARE THEY?

Sight alignment is the most important action in firing an accurate shot. It is defined as, having the front and rear sights allinged properly to one another. The illustrations above demonstrates proper sight alignment and its relationship to sight picture. Sight picture is defined as, the alignment of the front and rear sights to the target.
The red dot indicates the "point of impact of the bullet on the target" depending on the sight alignment and sight picture. Notice that with the proper sight alingment and sight picture, the target and rear sight will be slightly blurred. The focus should be on the front sight and therefore it will be sharply in focus. Why?
When you were young you could focus your eyes rapidly from front sight, rear sight, to target, rapidly. Thus, all three appeared to be in focus. As we got older, we lost that ability to the point that we could only focus on one item at the time. FOCUS ON THE FRONT SIGHT!
Normal bifocals do not help us any because they are of a strength for reading...not shooting. Progressive bifocals help some. In order to get that all important front sight into focus you have to tilt your head back and look through the stronger part of your bifocal. You will find it uncomfortable and it usually causes you to assume a shooting position that is not ballanced. You can get prescription glasses and have the bifocal adjusted for your front sight distance from your eyes.
HOW IMPORTANT IS SIGHT ALIGNMENT? LET'S DO A LITTLE MATH AND SEE.
Suppose your sight alignment was only off 1/100 of an inch and the barrell of your handgun was 5 inches long. At a distance of 50' (600 inches) 600/5 = 120 X 1/100 = 1.2 "
Yes, 1.2" is not very much when you are aiming at a life sized target standing 20 feet away or less. But the point is to demonstrate how important sight alignment is in the sight picture. When you factor in the "arc of movement" that is allways present when getting a sight picture, (because you cannot hold the firearm perfectly steady), the small degree of sight alignment error becomes magnified.
Ultimately, if you ever have to use deadly force with your firearm you will not remember seeing a sight alignment or sight picture. You will use your firearm as you have trained with it. That is why it is so important that you practice proper techniques with your firearm. Over a period of time your practice of proper techniques will become "muscle memory." You will do the proper thing without giving it a conscious thought. Sort of like a zillion other things we do that we have done all our lives. But remember, if you practice BAD HABITS, they too can become muscle memory! LEARN RIGHT - SHOOT RIGHT!
